Community Emergency Response Team

CERT

 The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) trains people in neighborhoods, the workplace, and schools in what is needed to respond to basic disaster situations. Some of the response skills include but are not limited to fire suppression, urban search and rescue, and medical operations. It helps members to take a more active role in emergency preparedness.

 Americans everywhere are being asked to volunteer their services to improve and safeguard our country. You too can take part of the Citizen Corps Initiative. The purpose of this initiative is to mobilize citizens for community and family preparedness and awareness. Programs will focus on terrorism, natural disasters, and crime prevention.

          CERT is a nationwide initiative. Training for CERT promotes a partnership between the community, police, fire and EMS . CERT members can give crucial and critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT is not limited to emergency situations, but also can help with non-emergency projects that aid in improving the safety of our community. The EAST HANOVER OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT will diligently work with our local police, firefighters and EMT’s in a coordinated effort to protect and serve the citizens of our community.

Role of CERTS in an emergency—CERTS have been used to:

o    Searching for lost or kidnapped children;

o    Staff Emergency Operations Centers and monitor events;

o    Emergency Operations Center Security; driving, information, assisting disabled visitors and minor first aid;

o    Manage “Spontaneous/convergent” volunteers;

o    Assist Red Cross and other relief organizations on mass care.

 If you are interested in volunteering your services and becoming trained to protect yourself, your family, and your neighbors from disasters, become a CERT member. Interested volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. For more information, contact the EAST HANOVER OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT at (973) 428-3031.
